What’s so special about a Prime Rib?

Prime Rib is a very impressive meat. It’s full of flavor, marbled with fat, and is so tender that it will melt in your mouth. I would have to say that a Prime Rib has become one of my very favorite meals to make and eat! Our family loves to serve this meal and invite family over to enjoy it with us!

This recipe call for the prime rib to stay in the oven for approximately 2 hours undisturbed, which gives you plenty of time to prepare the sides.

The ingredients and instructions are so simple. It is so much easier to make than one would think. I have found the best time to purchase the Prime Rib Roast, in my area, is around the Holidays. We have had Prime Rib Roasts from our raised beef and also from Wal-Mart. The USDA Choice Angus Beef Prime Rib from the meat section at Wal-Mart has been a great option for us when we are out of beef in our freezer. I highly recommend the steaks and Prime Rib at Wal-Mart that are in the USDA Choice section.

How long does it take to cook prime rib?

This will depend on two factors: First is the size of your prime rib. The second is how rare or done you prefer your meat. We prefer rare to medium rare, so the total oven time is around 2 1/2 hours for a 5- 8 lbs. roast. Keep in mind that the oven is only on for 30 minutes of that time, the rest of the time the oven is left unattended with NEVER OPENING THE OVEN DOOR! A meat thermometer is essential in determining that your roast has reached an internal temperature of 125-130 degrees.

How is Prime Rib different from a Ribeye steak?

Both of these come from the same cut of meat, the difference is the ribeye steak is cut from the roast as an individual steak. Prime Rib means a Whole Rib Roast. Some come with the bone and some are boneless. We have had both and either way have been delicious.

What If I Prefer Mine More Done?

No problem just roast your prime rib until the meat thermometer reaches:

115-120 degrees for rare

125-130 degrees for medium rare

135-140 degrees for medium

145-150 degrees for medium well

KEEP IN MIND THE MEAT TEMPERATURE WILL CONTINUE TO RISE 5-10 DEGREES WHILE RESTING OUT OF THE OVEN.

Can I reuse the leftovers?

Absolutely, the leftovers are great for warming up the next day! Just sear in a cast iron skillet to reheat. Store in an airtight container and it’ll stay good in the fridge for up to three days.
